Commodity as a Spectacle

Eddie Spitaletta

Debord is a very interesting man his thinking is unlike that of many individuals. His intellectuality is extremely superior which is why it is hard to understand his reading. His wording makes up stop and have to read over the sentence again to understand what point he is trying to get across. He sticks to his beliefs and we have to understand and respect how he looks at the spectacle.

What I got from reading Debord was he is trying to inform us that the spectacle transforms from commodity. Meaning that over time mass media will keep evolving as the years go on. There is no sky to the limit that it will go for technology will keep improving. We see this technology evolve with everyday that passes, more and more improvements are made for commodity. Now a days technology is in such a demand that it cannot go unseen. Which is where spectacle comes into play, it cannot go unseen because it is everywhere. Commodity only fuels the fire, we want more material possessions because we want to have what everyone wants. The competition has become so steep that the mass production levels are in an all time high.

Everyday life without mass media would not make sense because we are so accustomed to checking our smart phones every minute for news updates. It is all around us and people on an every day basis are using mass media to communicate. Debord understands that the spectacle is always changing and as a matter a fact he is correct. He has that air about him by explaining that mass media and technology has completely taken over. I would have to agree one hundred percent with him, there is no question that people have become so consumed by these advances that it has become almost unheathy. We as Americans would rather text than call someone or even see them face to face. Texting has become the vocal point for us, I cannot even lie I would rather text because it is an easy way to communicate. This can create problems with social skills but our society has adapted to these changes.

The best example that Debord gave was when he acknowledged that "The spectacle is the stage at which the commodity has succeeded in totally colonizing social life". (42) Debord is right by explaining this, he understands that would has become consumed in the spectacle. Without the spectacle there would be no commodity which is why we have taken it to a whole new level. Material possessions are a must and if we don't have the latest and greatest stuff we get over zealous. All we known is the technological advances because we are spoiled and live in a country where when we want sometime we save up and go buy it. the Consumption has taken over our lives which in a sense is not a bad thing. I like many others like to have nice things, we are lucky to live in a society where we can actually afford to have certain luxuries.

The spectacle has become a commodity and that is not abad thing if we can control it. It is just the world we live in and we have to accept it.
