Project Proposal

I will be doing documentary on a self taught musician named Moses LaPorte. The central theme of this documentary will be the level of creativity possessed by autodidacts compared to the musical creativity of those who study music. An autodidact is an individual who isn't formally taught by an educator or school system but indulges in self-teaching. Those who practice self-education just may possess more musical talent and gain success in the music industry, along with astounding critical acclaim. The musician Frank Zappa was noted for his quote, "Drop out of school before your mind rots from exposure to our mediocre educational system. Forget about the Senior Prom and go to the library and educate yourself if you've got any guts. Some of you like Pep rallies and plastic robots who tell you what to read." Keith Moon, the drummer of the rock band The Who was also a self-taught musician. He is regarded as one of the greatest drummers of all time. The only schooling he receiving was from another self-taught musician. David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix are also added to this list. Bowie was never a trained musician. He is a multi-instrumentalist, skilled with the piano, keyboards/synths, electric/acoustic guitar, harmonica, koto, limited bass, and percussion. The great Jimi Hendrix is widely considered one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. Rolling Stone listed Jimi Hendrix as the greatest guitarist of all time. Aside from popular culture, many classical musicians are also autodidacts.  I'm focus on this theme because I am also a self-taught in some way and I believe an individual does not need to necessarily know the fundamentals of how music is structured to gain success in the music industry or express creativity through it and create a beautiful sound.
