Group 6: Transmedia Storytelling

From: Minaday.com

Our presentation focused on transmedia storytelling. The core concepts of transmedia storytelling are outlined by Professor Henry Jenkins. We can define transmedia storytelling as stories that reach across multiple media platforms. Some of those include: books, films, television, comics, games, interactive websites... Some transmedia franchises include: Star Wars, Pokemon, Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones, and Batman. One of the important points Jenkins makes is that each piece of new media offer new insights into the overall story.  A great example of transmedia storytelling comes from a clever advertising campaign for the film The Dark Knight. Transmedia Marketing: The Dark Knight This example works perfectly for a number of reasons. One being that the story is being developed even before the films release. The video calls the campaign an "Alternate reality game". Players essentially participated both virtually and in the real world, uncovering clues along the way. Each new player and participant was essentially extending the story. We felt as though this example was a strong illustration of what transmedia storytelling is.

The second video in our presentation: Transmedia, Hollywood: Transmedia For a Change features Henry Jenkins and a panel of transmedia produces/creators. The video covers a number of transmedia topics. Some of which include: Transmedia and hollywood marketing, and transmedia for public service. The participants on his panel are people dedicated to creating transmedia stories. In other words, these people either started up or work for companies dedicated to creating transmedia experiences.

Some questions for thought:
Do you believe that people growing up now are going to expect more transmedia experiences as they get older?
Do you personally want to see more transmedia stories in the future?
How many transmedia franchises can you think of from the last 20 years?
